Ankle ArthritisAccording to recent research patients with rheumatoid arthritis, especially those who are obese have shown smaller circumstances of remission. These patients are in larger request for anti-tumor necrosis factor (anti-TNF) therapy than patients who are at a healthy weight.

As a result, obese patients usually require more drug treatment as opposed to patients at a lower weight. Author of the study Elisa Gremese commented “Obesity and rheumatoid arthritis are both on the rise, with devastating effects on individuals and society as a whole. These data reinforce the link between obesity and inflammation, and establish that (weight) is one of the few modifiable variables influencing the main outcomes in Rheumatoid Arthritis. Rheumatoid Arthritis affects about one in one hundred people worldwide.

Early detection of foot deformities arthritis can help prevent more severe secondary mechanical strains. If you are suffering from foot pain and think it might be caused by arthritis, you should seek the care of a podiatrist like  Dr. Mayer Salama of Salama Foot Care. Dr. Salama can examine your foot pain and rule out other conditions, such as plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendonitis, to help in a diagnosis of arthritis.

Arthritic Foot Care

In an average lifetime, we walk approximately 75,000 miles. This can put a great deal of stress on the 26 bones and 30 joints that we have in our feet. As we get older, our feet lose flexibility and elasticity. Our shock absorbers weaken, and if arthritis comes into play, the joints become inflamed and distorted. Arthritic foot care and treatment would become imperative at this point.

It is best to take care of your feet by wearing well-fitted shoes. Certain conditions may develop when you wear shoes that don’t fit properly, for example hammertoes, neuroma, and bunions. Wearing shoes that have a lower heel and extra room in the shoe can help your feet be comfortable. In cases of rheumatoid arthritis, the arch in your foot may become problematic. Buying shoes with arch support will help; it is also a good idea to buy shoes that contour to your foot.

Alleviating Arthritic Pain

-Specific exercises may help; stretching the Achilles tendon can prevent further pain and injury. Stretching can also increase your mobility.
-Most of the pain can be alleviated with anti-inflammatory drugs, heat, as well as topical medications with Capsaicin.
-Massages can also help to alleviate pain temporarily.

According to the study osteoporosis is a risky factor for foot fractures. Older women are said to be at a larger risk for a fracture.

A group of 10,000 women aged 65 and older were surveyed and tested by walking a certain distance. The team then focused on those who went on to have a foot or ankle fracture. Those who were more likely to have a foot fracture had osteoporosis, over 50, and were older and less physically active. Younger, overweight, and more physically active were to have ankle fractures.

If you are suffering from any podiatric complaints that may be related to age you should seek out the care of a podiatrist such as Dr. Mayer Salama of Salama Foot Care. Dr. Salama can evaluate your problem as well as provide you with treatment options.

When people age, some common issues that may occur are bone density loss, dry skin, poor circulation, and even rough brittle nails. These issues may also affect your foot health without care.

It is important to take care of your feet because feet that are injured or diseases can affect your overall health and having painful feet hinders your ability to do daily activities.

As we age, health problems become more likely, so it is essential to visit your doctor for check-ups. It is recommended to check your feet frequently for any possible cuts, bruises, swelling, corns, etc.

Cracked or dry feet can be treated by applying moisturizer. It is also important not to wear old socks because the older the sock, the higher the chance of exposure to bacteria.

Lastly, good foot health means you can have a more active lifestyle.

http://mediadownloads.mlb.com/mlbam/2013/05/28/images/mlbf_27511801_th_13.jpgToronto Blue Jays Brett Lawrie had an early departure, following a left ankle sprain after attempting to steal second base. Earlier this year, second baseman Jose Reyes badly sprained his ankle after making an awkward slide on that very same base. This time around Lawrie, had his own part in it sliding awkwardly and spraining his ankle. Unfortunately, Lawrie will be placed on the 15-day disabled list.

"He came in [Monday] night, the doctors ruled out a fracture and he might be able to play [Tuesday]." During the game yesterday his ankle started to swell up a little bit. Obviously it wasn't moving in the direction that everybody hoped. So we decided to get an MRI and it showed it was a lot more severe. So you're looking at two weeks, maybe three, just because he'll be down at least a week, said general manager Alex Anthopoulos."

Just like Lawrie, an ankle sprain can cause you to miss important competitive events. Ankle sprains should always be treated, no matter how minor it may seem. If you have sprained your ankle, seek the aid of a podiatrist like Dr. Mayer Salama of Salama Foot Care to ensure the injury is properly evaluated and appropriate treatment options are given.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Happen?

This type of injury takes place when the ligaments are torn or stretched beyond their limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured; however, even the simple act of walking may cause a sprain. If footing is lost or you are walking on uneven terrain, ankle damage may occur.

What are the Symptoms?

· Mild to moderate bruising
· Limited mobility
· Discoloration of the skin, depending on severity

Is there a Way to Care for my Ankle at Home?

Self-care for ankle sprains includes propping the ankle up and keeping it elevated, applying ice packs as needed, and remaining off your feet. Some may also find that wrapping the ankle with an ACE bandage and taking over-the-counter pain relievers are helpful.
