Phil Loadholt of the Minnesota Vikings limped off the field during a team scrimmage to unfortunately discover that he had likely sustained a torn Achilles tendon. The injury on his left foot could potentially keep the right tackle out for the rest of the season. Coach Mike Zimmer shared, “It’s disappointing for Phil, because he worked so hard and because he’s a great person.” Loadholt has played in 89 out of a possible 96 games through the first six years of his career and has been the starter since he was drafted.

What is the Achilles Tendon?

What are the symptoms of an Achilles Tendon Injury?

Achilles tendon injuries are diagnosed by a thorough physical evaluation, which can include an MRI. Treatment involves rest, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery. However, various preventative measures can be taken to avoid these injuries, such as:

- Thorough stretching of the tendon before and after exercise

- Strengthening exercises like calf raises, squats, leg curls, leg extensions, leg raises, lunges, and leg presses

A new form of hydrotherapy, Aquaroll, can treat various foot conditions including Morton’s neuroma and peripheral neuropathy. Aquaroll involves a tub that is partially filled with hot water and 30,000 tiny glass beads that swirl rapidly around the feet. Morton’s neuroma is a condition in which the nerves in the ball of the feet become swollen. Often described as “walking on a rock,” the condition makes it very painful to walk. Morton’s Neuroma
Morton's neuroma is a painful foot condition that commonly affects the areas between the third and fourth toe and the ball of the foot, although other areas of the foot are also susceptible to this condition. Morton’s neuroma is caused by an inflamed nerve in the foot that is being squeezed and aggravated by surrounding bones.  Women are more likely than men to have an occurrence of this foot condition.

What Increases the Chances of having Morton’s Neuroma?
-Ill-fitting high heels or shoes that add pressure to the toe or foot area.
-Jogging, running and any sports that involve constant impact to the foot area.
-Flat feet, bunions, and any other foot deformity may put you at a higher risk for developing Morton’s neuroma.

Summer weather is usually an indicator for many people of hot, sweaty, and unfortunately smelly feet. Regardless of the footwear you wear, moisture in the shoes can cause odors and even infections, such as Athlete’s foot. To help prevent summertime odor, make sure to thoroughly cleanse the feet everyday to get rid of any bacteria. Soak stinky feet in a vinegar and water solution to get rid of smells. While showering, be sure to wash the feet and scrub between the toes. After washing, make sure the feet are properly died, as unpleasant odor comes from moisture. Always wear dry pairs of socks, and spray shoes with a general purpose disinfectant spray.

With his step-counting pedometer, 69-year-old Jim Palmquist tracks his daily steps in a log book.
