Pregnant Jessica Ennis Opens up about her Feet and Damaged Achilles tendon

Jessica Ennis is pregnantHeptathlete Jessica Ennis 27, is expecting her first child as she continues to enjoy her absence from the track and recover from her damaged Achilles tendon.  'I started getting severe pain in my left heel last June but it was only after I had a few scans that doctors identified that the tendon in my Achilles had been damaged. All the continuous training for London 2012 had put an unbearable strain on it.'

Ennis like many athletes tried to minimize the pain with the use of steroid injections so she could participate in the World Championship in Moscow, but that did little for her. 'Having it operated on was an option but I wanted my body to heal naturally,' says Jess.

What is the Achilles Tendon?

The Achilles tendon is a tendon that connects the lower leg muscles and calf to the heel of the foot. It is the strongest tendon in the human body, and is essential for making movement possible. Because this tendon is such an integral part of the body, any injuries to it can cause severe difficulties and should immediately be presented to a doctor.

What are the symptoms of an Achilles Tendon Injury?

There are various types of injuries that can affect the Achilles tendon. The two most common are Achilles tendinitis and ruptures of the tendon.

Achilles Tendinitis Symptoms

- Inflammation
- Dull to Severe Pain
- Increased blood flow to the tendon
- Thickening of the tendon

Rupture Symptoms

- Total immobility
