Shoe Charity Aids Impoverished Foreign Children

Women work on cutting out shoe patterns at a Sole Hope shoe cutting party at Concord Baptist Church.A charity known as Sole Hope gathered local citizens at Concord Baptist Church to help make shoes for children in Uganda that suffer in poverty. These Ugandan children especially need these shoes since going barefoot can lead them to the risk of developing infestations of a local parasitic insect under their skin.

An infestation of this particular insect can lead to infection, sometimes even becoming fatal. The volunteers who participated in the event cut out the fabric and other materials used to make the shoes, which were then shipped to Africa by Sole Hope and assembled by workers in the country.

All children need to have healthy feet. If you would like assistance with keeping your children’s feet healthy, see podiatrist Dr. Mayer Salama of Salama Foot Care. Dr. Salama can provide help your child’s feet as well as treat any foot or ankle condition he or she may have.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet in childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care from birth to school-age.

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

· Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet

· Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.  Be sure the child wears comfortable and protective shoes so that they can grow into their feet properly.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet

  • Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus
  • Be watchful of any pain or injury
  • Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible
  • Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play
