Sydney Dancer Refuses to Let Flat Feet Stop Her Love for Dance

TV newsreader Chris Bath when she was a young girl as a dancerAs a young girl, flat feet and knock-knees kept Chris Bath from pursuing her ambitions as a ballet dancer. Today, the South Wentworthville native is keeping her love for dance alive as the new ambassador of Form Dance Projects in Parramatta. The foundation started as a community outreach center fourteen years ago and is now looking to find a home for its 800 dancers, choreographers, and school students. Local business and creative leaders appear to have the same goals as Form as there is now a push to establish an artistic center in the city.

“I loved dancing, but was not anatomically made for it so I had no turnout, my knees always wanted to knock in and my feet were also flat,” Bath commented. “I realized at age 12 when my teacher told me, but I refused to give in. This is the great thing about Form, it’s not just dancing—there are opportunities to become involved in workshops, choreography, special artistic projects.”

What are Flat Feet?

Flat feet are a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. Standing about 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arch never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – if you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms:

  • Pain around the heel or arch area.
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe.
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle.
  • Flat look to one or both feet.
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn.
