When training for your first marathon, it’s important to take the right steps to prepare properly. Giving yourself enough time to train is vital to building up your stamina as well as decreasing the risk of injury. Gradually increase how much you run each time; the “rule of thumb is to increase it by no more than 10 percent each week,” states okinawa.stripes.com. Chart a training plan to record your steps, ensure that you have proper rest after running, invest in properly-fitting running shoes, wear breathable fabric, make sure to hydrate continuously, and know your limits so you do not push your body and feet too hard.
Running injuries, even with proper precautions, can still occur in many runners. If you are suffering from a running injury, contact Dr. Mayer Salama of Salama Foot Care. Dr. Salama will do everything possible to treat your condition.
How to Prevent Running Injuries
Many common running injuries are caused by overuse and overtraining. When the back of the kneecap starts wearing out and starts causing pain in your knee, this is commonly referred to as runner’s knee. Runner’s knee is a decrease in strength in your quadriceps and can occur if you’re not wearing properly fitted or supporting shoes. To prevent runner’s knee, focusing on hip strengthening is a good idea, as well as strengthening your quads to keep the kneecaps aligned.
What Are Some Causes of Running Injuries?
- One cause of a common running injury is called iliotibial band syndrome.
- Plantar fasciitis is also another common injury.
- Stress fractures can occur from overtraining, lack of calcium, or even your running style.
Best Ways to Prevent Running Injuries
- Wear footwear that fits properly and suits your running needs.
- Running shoes are the only protective gear that runners have to safeguard them from injury.
- Make a training schedule. Adding strengthening exercises as well as regular stretching can help keep you strong and limber and can lessen the possibility of injuries.
- Stretching keeps muscles limber, this will help you gain better flexibility.

Statistics gathered by Danish website RunRepeat have concluded that expensive running shoes are often no better than cheaper running shoes. The information was collected from nearly 135,000 consumer reviews gathered over a year. The biggest surprise the reviews showed was that high-priced shoes often had lower ratings. The 10 most expensive running shoes, averaged at a price of $181 per pair, were rated 8.1 percent lower than the 10 cheapest models. These models had an average price of $61.
If you are a runner, wearing the right running shoe is essential. For more information, see Dr. Mayer Salama, D.P.M. of Salama Foot Care. Dr. Salama can treat your foot and ankle needs.
Choosing the Right Running Shoe for Your Foot Type
To increase performance and avoid the risk of injury, it is important to choose the right running shoe based on your foot type. The general design of running shoes revolves around pronation, which is how the ankle rolls from outside to inside when the foot strikes the ground.

A recent study has found that children have shorter and jerkier strides due to their shorter legs, which accommodate for their lacking length and height. Kids’ legs and feet remain close to the ground as they run because they simply do not have the time they need to leap into the air like adult legs. Jim Usherwood, coauthor of the study, shared, “Even when they think they’re running, they’re barely getting off the ground.” This does not necessarily mean that children are “bad” runners; they are simply working with what they have.
Making sure that your children maintain foot health is very important as they grow up. If you have any questions contact Dr. Mayer Salama, D.P.M. of Salama Foot Care. Dr. Salama will treat your child’s foot and ankle needs.
Keeping Children's Feet Healthy
Having healthy feet in childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care from birth to school-age.
Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.
As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.
As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet

Plantar fasciitis can be very painful and inconvenient. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, visit Dr. Mayer Salama, D.P.M. of Salama Foot Care. Dr. Salama can treat your heel pain as well as any other foot or ankle condition.
What is Plantar Fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of a the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, known as the plantar fascia, and causes mild to severe heel pain.
What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?
· Excessive running
· Non-supportive shoes
· Overpronation
· Repeated stretching and tearing of the plantar fascia
How Can It Be Treated?
· Conservative measures – anti-inflammatories, ice packs, stretching exercises, physical therapy, orthotic devices
· Shockwave therapy – sound waves are sent to the affected area to facilitate healing and is usually used for chronic cases of plantar fasciitis
· Surgery – usually only used as a last resort when all else fails. The plantar fascia can be surgically detached from the heel
While very treatable, plantar fasciitis is definitely not something that should be ignored. Especially in severe cases, speaking to your doctor right away is highly recommended to avoid complications and severe heel pain. Your podiatrist can work with you to provide the appropriate treatment options tailored to your condition.

According to a new cardiology study, vigorous running over 7 mph, over 2.4 hours a week, more than three times a week can be as harmful as not exercising at all.
Published in the Journal of American College of Cardiology, the paper suggests that there may be a point at which exertion becomes threatening and overrides the benefits of an active lifestyle. Some doctors are cautious of what the study may suggest.
Dr. David Bach, a cardiologist and avid runner, cautioned, “It’s important for people not to selectively use the research published recently as a reason not to exercise, when conditions that afflict sedentary people, like obesity and diabetes, are so prevalent.”
Maintaining a healthy weight and an active lifestyle can promote not only foot health, but overall health. To learn more, speak with Dr. Mayer Salama, D.P.M. of Salama Foot Care. Dr. Salama will provide you with quality podiatric care.
Obesity and your Feet
Since your feet are what support your entire weight when standing, any additional weight can result in pain and swelling. Being overweight is one of the main contributors to foot complications.
Problems & Complications
Extra Weight – Even putting on just a few extra pounds could create serious complications for your feet. As your weight increases, your balance and body will shift, creating new stresses on your feet. This uneven weight distribution can cause pain, even while doing the simplest tasks, such as walking.
Diabetes – People who are overweight are at serious risk of developing type-2 diabetes, which has a drastic impact on the health of your feet. As you get older, your diabetes might worsen, which could lead to loss of feeling in your feet, sores, and bruises. You could also become more prone to various infections.
Plantar fasciitis – Pressure and stress that is placed on muscles, joints, and tendons can trigger plantar fasciitis, which is an inflammation of tissue that forms along the bottom of the foot.
