stretching exercisesFilming for John Simm’s new crime drama PREY has been stopped temporarily so that the actor can recover from a leg injury he recently incurred while on-set. Simm was shooting a scene where his character climbs out of a river bank when he suddenly feels a sharp pain in the muscles of one of his lower extremities.

"We were on about the third take of me clambering up this wet verge,” he said. “As I launched myself forward my foot slipped and I felt my calf muscle tear.” Simm claims that he did plenty of stretching exercises and other forms of preparation before the shoot, so he’s not sure what could have caused the injury.

Failing to stretch the feet correctly before taking part in strenuous activities could make you more susceptible to getting an injury. If you have questions about the best ways to stretch the feet, call podiatrist Dr. Mayer Salama, DPM of Salama Foot Care. Dr. Salama will go over proper techniques with you assist with any other problems you may have.

Stretching Your Feet

Being the backbone of the body, the feet carry your entire weight and can easily become overexerted, causing cramps and pain. As with any body part, stretching your feet can serve many benefits. From increasing flexibility to even providing some pain relief, be sure to give your feet a stretch from time to time. This is especially important for athletes or anyone performing aerobic exercises, but anyone experiencing foot pain or is on their feet constantly should also engage in this practice.

Good ways to stretch your feet are:

  • Crossing one leg over the others and carefully pull your toes back. Do 10-20 repetitions and repeat the process for each foot
  • Face a wall with your arms out and hands flat against the wall. Step back with one foot and keep it flat on the floor while moving the other leg forward. Lean towards the wall until you feel a stretch. Hold for 30 seconds and perform 10 repetitions for each foot
  • Be sure not to overextend or push your limbs too hard or you could risk pulling or straining your muscle
