Plantar FasciitisGeorge Biondic was to attend a 48-hour race within the men’s 60-64 age category featured in the Across The Years Ultramarathon. However, Biondic’s initial upbeat, go-getting view took a turn for the sour after developing plantar fasciitis in his foot.

Sadly, Biondic fell two hours before medics would inform him that participating in the race would not cause additional damage.  “I couldn’t stand on it, let alone run,” Biondic said. “It put us 10 miles behind schedule on our distance and it became clear the Canadian record was not attainable. “But we didn’t want to quit. We were really prepared for this race. I trained 11 months for this one. Biondic was later able to attain the record.  “The record seemed possible if we avoided problems and didn’t sleep the second night,” said Biondic, who went on to complete 277.08 kilometres. “We went 48 hours and it wasn’t until the last five minutes was it clear that we had the record.”

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the connective tissues on the bottom of the foot, causing pain in the heel and arch of the foot.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

· Lack of adequate footwear
· Obesity
· Excessive running
· Poor foot support
· Overpronation

How Can Plantar Fasciitis Be Treated?

· Conservative measures – anti-inflammatories, ice packs, stretching exercises, physical therapy, orthotic devices.
· Shockwave therapy – sends sound waves to the areas where pain is experience.  Requires multiple sessions.  This is used for very persistent cases of plantar fasciitis.
· Ultrasound-guided technique with steroid injections into the plantar fascia.  This is from a relatively new and small study, but was shown to be effective in most cases treated.
