Going for a walk outside is a pastime that many people enjoy. It is relaxing, soothing, and has a lot of great health benefits. Some people walk on a track, on a trail, or on the road. Some people wear boots while others wear sneakers. There is even a new trend getting people to walk outside completely barefoot.

Barefoot walking or “earthing” is when a person walks outside on the soil, grass, or sand without any shoes or socks on. Studies have shown that walking barefoot outside can improve quality of sleep, can reduce anxiety, stress and blood pressure and can also reduce inflammation.

Earthing does not include walking barefoot on pavement. Walking on pavement can be dangerous and do harm to your feet.  The theory behind earthing is that walking on the earth’s natural environment directly affects the electrons your body uses to function.

Earthing isn’t for everybody but walking does provide a lot of proven health benefits. It can reduce the risk of certain types of cancers, help with obesity, and also help lower blood sugar levels.

What are other benefits?

Your body’s overall balance and circulation can improve since walking barefoot is usually harder on the body and muscles and increases blood flow. Your blood pressure can also drop when walking because exercise can help an individual relax and allows for better circulation.

What if I want to walk barefoot?

It is important to walk in a place that is clean, free of hazardous debris, and animal matter. If you walk barefoot and injure your foot you can become prone to wounds, infections and diseases.
