Our feet are used constantly to help us move around, perform a job, and even to balance us. They are essential to our daily lives and sadly, we don’t always pay enough attention to our feet. Our feet are amazing. Sometimes we can even tell if we are suffering from a medical condition due to symptoms showing up in our feet first. One such condition that can have symptoms that originate from the feet is jaundice.

Jaundice is a medical condition in which a problem with the liver causes high levels of bilirubin, resulting in yellowing of the skin, eyes, mouth and nails. The bilirubin does not get processed properly in the body and as a result manifests in the skin. It is usually a sign that the liver is beginning to shut down. It is also a symptom of other serious diseases and should not be treated lightly.

In some cases, children are born with jaundice. This is not usually something to panic over, as it is very treatable in young children. Some children have slight symptoms and can go home. Other children have more severe symptoms and must be put under specialized lights to help them deal with the excess bilirubin and to heal and get better. The feet can turn yellow as well as the rest of the skin on the body.

Yellowing of the skin is the classic feature of jaundice. Yellow toenails are often seen with jaundice as well. Usually they come as a pair but sometimes they are separate. Yellow toenails can also be mistaken as fungus. In order to be sure, it is important to seek the help of a trained podiatrist.

Since normally yellow toenails would not be the only symptom, if you have no other issues, you are unlikely to be suffering from jaundice. However, if you have noticed a yellow/green tinge to your skin or in the white your eyes, or have noticed your urine is darker or your feces lighter than usual, you should consult your doctor.

Jaundice is a very treatable disorder if it is dealt with right away. If you see any signs of yellowing of your feet or your toenails, it is important to contact a podiatrist right away so that they can determine the true cause and prescribe you a treatment as fast as possible.
