It is very unsightly to have a toe nail infection, especially in the warmer months when we have our feet exposed more often than in the colder months. This information will help you understand a few key points about this ugly topic.

What are some causes of nail fungus?

  • Yeast and molds
  • Overgrowth of fungi under or around the nail
  • Thrives in warm moist environment

What symptoms will I experience?

  • Discoloration and darkening of the nail
  • Thickened brittle nail
  • Dull without shine or distorted shape

What can be done to treat nail fungus?

  • Topical or oral ointments – not always effective and have some degree of risk and can be costly
  • Surgical – having the nail removed is the quickest approach
  • Laser procedure – heat that destroys harmful fungi while saving the healthy tissue around the area

How can I prevent a nail fungus?

  • Don’t share nail clippers, files, shoes or socks, basically, keep your feet to yourself
  • Avoid trauma to your nail like cuts or bangs to the nail, be careful with your toes
  • Dry cotton socks, don’t let them sit wet for too long, change them often
  • Shoes that allow air to circulate and keep feet dry
  • Shower flip flops in public facilities to avoid bacteria

Nail fungal infections (aka “onychomycosis” yikes) is a fungal imbalance that effects our toenails. Here are some interesting facts from our experts in podiatry:

  • 5% of the general population contract a nail fungal infection, 20% are over the age of 60 and 50% are over the age of 70
  • Conventional approaches for treatment are effective in less than half of all cases
  • Men contract it more than women
  • Working in areas that are damp increases the risk
  • 1/3 of people with diabetes have nail fungal infections

Some risk factors include poor circulation, thickening of nails, diabetes, age, psoriasis, immune disorders and over perspiration. If you find that you suffer from more than one of these conditions you are more prone to getting toe nail fungal infections and should practice some of the preventative steps mentioned above.
